A short relief to the many postponed and canceled films due to the pandemic, Disney has announced that they will be pushing for a theatrical release for The New Mutants this August 28, 2020. The news came out as a surprise since the studio has been keeping their mouths sealed for this specific project. Their big titles such as Mulan (July 24, 2020), Black Widow (November 6, 2020), Soul (November 20, 2020), and Eternals (February 12, 2021) have already secured a spot to their calendar, so this movie coming as a shy into this year’s summer release is already worth celebrating. Of course, many knew The New Mutants for being delayed constantly since it was announced by 20th Century Fox in 2015. It was supposed to be part of a new roster of films in the studio’s X-Men cinematic universe alongside Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool and Gambit starring Channing Tatum (what happened here?) before going on post-production hell with multiple reshoots and hesitations with its creative focus. By the day The New Mutants eventually gets its long-deserved release in the cinemas, everyone who has been involved with it would be five years older since they first started making it. One would recall Cabin in the Woods going through the same long development hell before being shown publicly in 2012. The New Mutants tells the story of five young mutants, who have just discovered that a secret facility will be using their abilities against their well, will fight to escape their previous sins, and save themselves from something bigger. Directed by Josh Boone (The Fault in Our Stars), the film stars Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones), Anya Taylor-Joy (The Witch), Alice Braga, Charlie Heaton (Stranger Things), Blu Hunt (Another Life), and Henry Zaga (Trinkets).
