Twisty Returns to American Horror Story For Season Seven

Twisty the clown is returning to American Horror Story for its seventh season. Producer Ryan Murphy took to Instagram to make the announcement today. Seemingly cashing in on the scary clown genre with the release of the remake of IT later on in the year. Pennywise is no doubt the standard when it comes to scary clowns and Twisty’s design is certainly influenced by Stephen King’s colorful villain.

Twisty the Clown was the big bad in season 4 of American Horror Story, subtitled Freak show. Twisty was a retired clown who took issue with the freak show coming to town and wreaked havoc to show his displeasure. He wore a prosthetic mask to cover his face after attempting to blow his brains out with a shotgun. He was literally dropped on his head as a baby, which caused some mental issues. He ran off to join the circus when he was young. Due to his popularity, the owners of the freak show spread a rumor that he was molesting children. Disgraced, he went back home to find that his alcoholic mother was dead. His previous experience with the freak show led to his hatred of the one currently occupying his hometown of Jupiter.

Believing he was saving children from their “mean parents”, Twisty murdered the parents and kidnapped the children. The children were legitimately terrified of him, however, Twisty thought that they loved him. Twisty met his end at the edge of Edward Mordrake’s blade.

There is no word on whether John Carroll Lynch will return to the role, but give American Horror Story’s penchant for keeping actors for multiple seasons, this seems most likely.

Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, Billie Lourd, Billy Eichner, Cheyenne Jackson, Alison Pill, Colton Haynes and Adina Porter will star in the upcoming season. The upcoming season will in all likelihood debut in September, keeping up with the past two seasons. It will be based on the 2016 election, however, it will not feature direct takes on Hilary Clinton and Donald Trump. As it always has, American Horror Story will deal with real issues through allegory. Perhaps with Twisty the Clown’s appearance, they will be commenting on the “political circus” that last year’s election became.
