Jeffrey Silverthorne Captures Haunting Morgue Photography

Jeffrey Silverthorne captured a series of chilling photographs between 1972 and 1979 in a morgue in Rhode Island. Albeit the grim nature of his subjects, Silverthorne’s mission was to highlight the lingering humanity in every body even in the transitional state balancing between life and death. His aim was far more than just to create haunting images. The following 15 images come from corpses that died in an array of different ways.

Silverthorne’s morgue photography is raw and unaltered as opposed to the Victorian death photography which was staged in beauty. From horrifying accidents to deaths by natural causes, the photographs focus on nuances such as injuries, facial expression and the position of limbs. Despite being disturbing, it is hard to pry your eyes away from what is on display.
