If you haven’t heard of Netflix’s ‘Bird Box’ in the past several weeks, you’ve probably been living under a rock.

The film has taken social media by storm, inspiring several memes and some not-so-safe challenges. Sandra Bullock stars in the film, which takes place in a post-apocalyptic world in which people uncontrollably kill themselves if they look outside. Now, the film has turned in some pretty impressive numbers after nearly a month of release.

Nielsen has confirmed Netflix’s initial report that 26 million United States subscribers watched ‘Bird Box’ in the first week of its release. Globally, the film was watched by 45 million subscribers that week. Deadline reports that the numbers make ‘Bird Box’ Netflix’s most successful original movie to date. However, season two of ‘Stranger Things’ beat out those numbers by one million.

In another interesting twist, the first day of ‘Bird Box’s’ release wasn’t the movie’s most successful. That turned out to be the eight day of release (December 28th). This is likely do to the quick social media promotion it got online. Given the success of the first film, it’s hard to imagine Netflix not picking up ‘Bird Box’ for a sequel.
