Every day people have strange encounters with ghosts or other unknown things. These ghost encounters can be extremely minor where a person just sees an apparition passing through a doorway or can be extremely extreme where people witness first hand poltergeists happening in their own homes. These ghost encounters, though, will send chills throughout your body because some are intensely terrifying while others are just downright scary and creepy.

1. The Woman in the Window

Not the actual woman staring at the people in the graveyard, but what a ghost in a window looks like.

To start off this list, reddit user SJMoore86 remembers an encounter they once had. The user and their friends were once visiting a graveyard that was located only a couple of blocks away from their home. To make this tale even scarier, they decided to investigate this graveyard on the night of Halloween. The user recalls that there is a building where restaurants have a hard time staying open for some reason and that the graveyard is located in the back of it. As they were walking through the graveyard, though, they happened to look up to see that the lights were on in the building and there appeared to be a lady in a pink dress just staring at them. At this time, there was no restaurants open at all in the building.

After seeing the lady in the window, the reddit user and their friends ran from the graveyard, but noticed that the woman in pink started to follow them by gliding, not walking, window to window. They continued to run through the graveyard and they came to a point where there was no windows in a certain spot in the house where the lady would be able to tell which way these people went. However, as soon as they came to the next set of windows, there was the lady just blankly staring at them.

2. The Basement

Reddit user Orange_Kid goes into a detailed story about the time they house sat someone’s house. Two months after their brother and wife got married, they needed to go out of town and needed someone to come and take care of their cats to make sure they were well fed. Their house was a drive from the users office, just like his apartment was, but were only a few minutes from one another, and the brother said that the user could stay in the guest bedroom to save him some gas. The user gathered the keys and instructions and decided to stay there Monday-Wednesday.

As they recall, Monday evening was uneventful until around midnight. As they were lying on the living room couch watching television with a cat on their chest, they started to drift off to sleep. The next thing the user knew, they were standing in complete darkness. They freaked out and had no knowledge where they were. As they searched in the complete darkness to find some type of indicator to help them understand where they were, they found a faint blue light coming from above and realized they were in the basement. The light they had discovered was coming through the basement door and was the kitchen light, since the door was located there. The user bolted up the stairs, turned on the kitchen light, and slammed the basement door. The user was in a state of panic until they finally calmed down and came to the conclusion that they probably sleep walked down there.

The user then informed the readers about some information of the house. The house was extremely nice except for one thing- the basement. They recall that the basement was completely unfinished and was one of the major things their brother and sister in law wanted to fix up to complete the look of the house. The only things down in the basement were a couple of boxes and a washer and dryer, some things that didn’t make the user want to go down there and actually made them forget it existed. The other thing the user informed the readers was that sleepwalking ran in their family, almost like it was some type of joke to them. Their brother would occasionally sleep talk or sleepwalk, always scaring him since it was at times random, and that the idea of people doing things while they were sleeping didn’t sit too well with him. The users’ brother knew of the phobia the user developed and would tease them about it, making it one big joke in the family that the user had this very specific phobia. The user knew, though, they had never sleep walked ever in their life, making it strange they did it the first night watching the house.

After returning from the basement, the user realized that the television was still on and was now playing Wedding Crashers. They sat on the couch and tried to laugh off their creepy experience, thinking it would be a good joke to tell their brother when he returned home. After the movie ended, the user headed up to the guest bedroom where they stayed asleep for the rest of the night. That was the conclusion of night one. When the user woke up, everything appeared to be less scary and they even texted their brother about it and started to make jokes of his unsettling experience.

The user then became completely unbothered by it and continued on with their day. After their long day of work, though, dread overcame them as they were walking to their car from their office and paranoia set in. To ease the anxiety that was developing, the user stopped along the way to pick up a rubber door stopper before going back to their brother’s house. When they arrived at the house, they kicked it in between the crack of the basement door and floor as much as it would go and tested to see if the door would budge. Once they discovered it wouldn’t move, they were satisfied with their plan.

A little while later, they headed up stairs and went to sleep, but awoke again to be standing in the darkness. They knew they were in the basement because the smell was the same and the concrete surrounding them was the same. They proceeded to look for the light they found last time, but they had a harder time finding it since they were farther away from the door than before. They remembered that last night they were only a couple of feet from the stairs, but that night they were about ten or so feet away from the stairs. So, they ran up the stairs again and discovered that the rubber wedge that was in the door was a couple of feet away from it, almost as if someone tossed it there.

The user had a hard time visualizing themselves waking up, walking down the stairs, bending down and removing the wedge and throwing it, then walking down the stairs to the basement. It creeped them out again and sent shivers down their spine. The user decided to turn on the basement lights and permanently leave them on to help with their paranoia. When they flicked on the switch at the top of the stairs, they noticed that there was a main switch at the bottom of the stairs. The way the basement was formatted was that the stairs almost separated the basement, leaving the washer and dryer in a small space to the right and a big open area to the left.

The user proceeded to walk down the stairs and turn on the main switch for the entire basement. That’s when they noticed something out of the ordinary. The user remembered that their brother never showed them this before. About 10 to 15 feet in front of them, there was a door in the big area that appeared to be a door for a small closet. The door had no handle or knob on it, just a hole where one should go, making it look like it would just swing freely open whenever. As the user continued to look at this door, they realized that the door was close to where they were standing when they woke up. A thought then came into their mind: they were waking up in the middle of the night and each night they were getting closer and closer to the closet door. As soon as they thought of that, they ran up the stairs, left all of the lights on and closed the door shut. They proceeded to go into the bedroom, but had an extremely hard time falling asleep. That was the conclusion of night two for them.

The next morning, Wednesday, they woke up late for work. They didn’t think about the basement as they scrambled to get ready for work, but as they sat in their office, all they could think about the closet door and what could be behind there. Then, they texted their brother and ask him would could potentially behind the door in the basement. The brother texted back, questioning why the user was in the basement, and the user remembered that they never told their brother they woke up in the basement. So, they filled him in on what was going on and how the user woke up in the basement two nights in a row. After what seemed like forever, the brother wrote back explaining that the basement was creepy and informed his brother not to go down there. They attempted to put the liter box for the cats down there but the cats ended up making a mess in the house because they refused to go down there. The brother further explains that he volunteers to do every chore except to do the laundry because he himself refuses to go down into the basement. This surprised the user because their brother was never a believer in the paranormal or any type of superstitions. The brother also ignored the question about the door, but the user decided to let it go and finish working.

When work was over, the user started to get the same feeling of dread they experienced the day before and decided to not spend the night at the house. They went over and took care of the cats, retrieved their stuff, and headed back to the safety of their own apartment. As they went to their apartment, though, anxiety kicked in as they started to think about all the steps they would have to take to end up back in the basement if they were to sleep walk again. However, once in their apartment, they slept through the entire night, concluding night three for them.

Thursday morning comes around and they stop at the house as they planned to take make sure the cats were okay and the house was set for the return of their brother and sister in law. Before the user left, they remembered that the lights were on in the basement and didn’t hesitate to go down there and shut them off. When they went down the stairs to turn off the lights, the whole vibe of the basement didn’t appear to be as scary as before, and even the door without the knob didn’t seem as scary as it appeared to be. They decided to investigate the door since they felt comfortable down there and they remembered as they were walking towards the door, they didn’t feel anything at all. That all changed, though, when they reached inside the whole where a knob should be and felt an electric feeling surge through their body and imagined a hand coming through the door and grabbing theirs. They immediately felt like something horrible was going to happen if they opened the door so they ran up the stairs and left the house.

Flashing forward to a month later, the user met their brother for happy hour one day. After a few drinks, they started to joke with one another about the user sleep walking and the creepy basement inside the brothers house. The user questioned the brother again about the door and the brother first jokingly told the user they didn’t want to know what was behind the door, but then began to insist they didn’t want to know. However, the brother caves in and tells the user. The user didn’t believe him at first since the brother joked too much before in the past.

The brother’s explanation was this: the previous owners of the house were also the first owners of the house, and they had a teenage daughter who used the basement as her room. The door the user kept referring to was her closet, and one night, she unfortunately curled up on the floor, took pills, and killed herself. The family was then going to remodel the basement but realized they could not complete the mission, so they packed their things and left. That was the reason why the basement was the only unfinished part of the house and was the reason the brother could afford it- the family had to disclose their daughters suicide in selling the house. The brother persisted that if the user didn’t believe him to look it up and look at the market values of similar houses, which revealed that the brothers was extremely lower than the rest. The brother and his wife thought that it was a bargain and they were rational people, so they accepted the offer and decided to keep quiet about what really happened inside of the house. The wife grew fine with the basement and didn’t mind doing the laundry down there, but the brother soon grew to despise it. He apologized to the user for not telling them the information he just disclosed with them but he thought the user would have no reason to going down there.

The user continues to explain what actually made them believe in their brother. The user told the brother that the only thing that is making them believe him was that the last day he was there, they went over to the closet door. At this point, the brother’s face completely changed. The user continued to tell their brother that the air around the user felt electric, and the same time the user said it, their brother said it as well. When the user said this, they noticed that the brothers face changed and knew he was telling the truth. The user never stepped foot in the basement and never sleep walked again.

3. The Ouija Board

Reddit user arminian talks about how they played with a Ouija board in college. They recall that they were not on the board when it started to spell out “F— Mary” over and over again. Someone in the room proceeded to ask who Mary was and the board spelled out the word “virgin”. Then, the person asked why and the board spelled “because she watches him”. The last question the person asked was “who” and this is where things got creepy. The piece on the board slid off and landed at the users feet.

The user discloses to the readers that they never told anyone about their religious background because they live a life complete opposite of their initial upbringing in life. The user ran out of the room after piece landed at their feet and when they got to their car, they noticed that long blades of grass were lining all of their windows and appeared to be wedged in between the weather stripping and the actual glass. The user claims that they weren’t inside long enough for a single individual or multiple individuals to precisely put all of those blades of grass on all four of their windows.

4. The Night Visitor

Reddit user Coolman_Express talks about their ultimate scary story that had actually happened to them. When they were about 10 or 11 years old, they stayed up kind of late than they normally do. They were restless that night, so they decided to take their blanket and tuck themselves in close to their wall, since their twin bed was right against it. They remembered that they were in bed for about an hour when they started to hear an unsettling noise coming from somewhere in their room and they described it to be muffled crying. They started to really focus on the noise and started to assume that maybe they were just imagining it or that they were simply dreaming because they finally fell asleep.

After a few minutes, though, the noise continued the user needed to see what it was. They turned around in their bed to see a woman in a dress standing at the far side of the room and appeared to be crying into her hands. The user described this woman to have mattered hair, her clothes were all tattered, and was a whopping 7 or 8 feet tall and was crammed against the ceiling as she stood crying into her hands. After a few more moments, she slowly looked up at the user and starts to scream, but the user described the scream as if it was coming from somewhere outside of their room. The woman proceeded to make eye contact with the user, then disappeared after walking through the wall. They finished their story saying how they stayed awake all night because of the mysterious, haunting woman in their room.

5. The Old Prison

Not the prison in the story, but what an old, creepy prison hallway looks like.

Reddit user ArbyNoodleArmy recalls of a time when they were on tour of an old building that was located in Australia. The building they were on a tour of was a prison for convicts that were sent over from the United Kingdom. The user continued to tell their story about how they went down a flight of stairs and as soon as they did, they felt pressure around their neck/windpipe area. They claim that they didn’t think much of it, only as a weird experience and proceeded on with the tour. While continuing with the tour, though, they rubbed their neck in hopes that the sensation they just felt went away. When the tour was heading back down, the guide informed them that a man hung himself in that stairwell and people sometimes report that they feel the sensation of being strangled. The user completely freaked out from that information, but refrained from telling anyone because they were afraid they wouldn’t believe them.

6. The Footprint

Not the footprint in the story, but what a weird, creepy footprint looks like in mud.

Reddit user whatchuknowboutthat starts their story off with telling the readers there have been a multitude of strange occurrences that had happened in their house, but they are sharing one of the more frightening ones. They continue on and give a backstory to the reader, saying that where their house is located was once an open prairie and that they discovered Native American artifacts lying around their property.

They proceed with the story, starting with when their parents divorced, the user and their mother moved into the house. They both thought the house was great because there was plenty of space for both of them and there was an overall cozy feeling to it. But, that cozy feeling started to vanish as stranger and stranger things started to happen to them. The user explained that the more they noticed the strange occurrences happening throughout the house, the more frequent they happened. They described some things as hearing a person walking downstairs as they were brushing their teeth and just assumed it was their mother doing some last minute things. However, whenever the user went to go check, no one would be down there. The user explained that footsteps were one of the more common things that happened in their house, especially late at night when they were asleep.

As time went on, things got even more weird for the user and their mother. One day, the user and their friend were coming back from being outside in the sun and decided to go to the user’s moms house. Their mother was away on a business trip, the two friends that it would be awesome having the house to themselves. They thought that they could drink when they got to the house or do some mischievous activities while they were alone in the house, but upon their arrival, they found out they were completely wrong with their assumptions.

As soon as they got inside of the house, they headed straight for the basement since it was cooler than the rest of the house. As they were walking down the stairs, the user noticed that their Beatles Yellow Submarine poster was tilted slightly to the left. This didn’t bother the user because they thought that someone accidentally hit it or knocked it out of place, so they quickly fixed it and continued on down the stairs to the basement. In their basement, they had a lot of pictures or posters hanging around the entire basement, making this next experience chill them to the bone. The 10-15 pictures/posters the user had in their basement were each slightly tilted to the left. What made this occurrence even stranger was the storage room door, which was a room that had a dirt floor that was lifted four feet from the ground, was wide open. The user proceeded to walk over and close it when they noticed a golden glow emanating out of the room. The light that was in the room was turned on, and the only way to turn it on was by using the 10 foot long cord attached to it.

The user climbed into the storage room on their hands and knees and turned the light off. They were hoping there was some type of natural explanation to all of the weird events that just occurred in the basement, and to calm her nerves, the user called their mother to ask about it. The mother questioned the user because she had no idea what they were talking about and informed the user that she hadn’t been in the basement for weeks before leaving for her trip. The user exclaimed that shivers went down their spine then and when they looked back into the storage room, they could see a footprint in the dirt. They described it as the most distorted and mangled footprint that someone has ever seen. The user and their friend were both frozen with fear at that point and when they turned to look at one another, they both experienced a gut-wrenching, sickening feeling. The user slammed the door shut, locked it, and both the user and the friend ran up the stairs. The user claims that they will never forget how mangled and sickening the footprint looked to them, and that the thought of them climbing into the storage room to shut the light off continuously sends shivers down their spine.

7. Happy Birthday

Not the ghost in the story, but could this represent what the daughter could have seen?

Reddit user patentspatented tells the story of how them and their family moved into a new house only a few months ago. They explain that as they were in the process of buying the house, the renter, who was in their mid-40’s, was living it in unexpectedly died one day from natural causes. The renter died in the middle of the night and in the middle of the living room. Shortly after moving into the house, the user’s two year old daughter starts to talk about the ghost that is living in the house with them.

The user explains to the reader that their daughter is two and two year olds can be extremely impressionable. The user recalls that Halloween just passed and the two year old had a Halloween book that she loved to read, so they thought that her talking about the ghost living in the house was just coming from the book she looked at every day. However, the daughter continued to inform the user that the ghost was in her playhouse downstairs on the basement, the ghost was hiding on the stairs, or the ghost was just simply standing in a corner, not moving. The daughter never seemed to be in fear of the ghost, though, and always considered it to be her friend. The user explains that they had no fear of this “ghost” because of how the daughter treated it and rationalized that the ghost could be a lot worse than it appears to be.

The user tells the readers that they would often tell the ghost that it was more than welcome to stay inside the house with them, or, that if it wanted to leave they had that option as well. The user discloses that they were 30/70 that the ghost was actually real, and that their daughter talking to the ghost or claiming she saw the ghost was just a figment of her imagination because of the Halloween book she had. The user’s views shifted one day, though, when the user and their daughter were heading out the car one day to drop the daughter off at daycare.

The day was rainy and still a little dark out. The user’s daughter informed them that it was the ghost’s birthday and that she wanted them to sing happy birthday to the ghost because he was standing on the back deck. The user claims that they continued to disregard what their daughter was saying because she was a little birthday obsessed since she made the user and the family sing happy birthday to Mickey Mouse, a bowl of fruit snacks, and the bathroom. The user entertained their daughter, though, and sang the ghost a happy birthday and continued on with their day. At the end of the day, though, curiosity was poking at the user and they looked up the obituary to the man who passed away in the house. What stunned the user was that on the obituary, that day was in fact the ghost’s birthday.

8. The Man By The Lake

Reddit user Lanaglugglug tells their husband’s story about when he was in high school and some of his friends had a campout at his friends’ aunt and uncle’s house in the country. They were your average campers because they pitched their tent, had the standard cook out of a camping trip, and a plethora of other things to make it authentic.

During the night, the users husband went to go on a short walk near the lake they were by because he needed to use the bathroom. As he was doing his business, he looked up and noticed that a strange man was walking around the lake and was heading towards him. The husband described this man to be wearing a flannel shirt that was red, jeans, and some work boots. The husband thought that it was extremely strange for a man to be walking around this lake at night, especially since they were in the middle of the country, so he proceeded to ask the man what he was doing here. The man ignored the users husband and continued to walk his path until he just completely disappeared and was no longer there.

The husband frantically ran towards his friends, woke them up, and proceeded to tell them what had happened. The boy who’s aunt and uncle’s house they were using was completely stunned by this story and ran inside to wake them up. After hearing what had happened, the aunt immediately broke down crying and informed the boy that she had been seeing that same man inside of their house, sometimes standing at the foot of their bed, and the husband didn’t believe her at all. Apparently, the husband proclaimed her to be insane and they were on the verge of a divorce because of the claims she was telling him. So, when she heard someone else saw the man, she was extremely relieved that someone else witnessed him and she was not crazy. She was so thrilled to have some type of validation now.

9. The Girl on All Fours

Reddit user Anweow9069 tells the story of an old bridge being in their town that is rumored to be extremely haunted by a little girl who sadly drowned in the river beneath it. Rumor was that if anyone came at just the right time, you might be able to hear her scream. The user recalls that when they were in high school, them and their buddies were bored one night and decided they were all going to go ghost hunting. The user tells the reader that they were from a town in Illinois that had 6,000 people in it, half were inmates and mental health patients, making the rest of the people in the town become creative all on their own.

The user continues on with the story by saying that they get to the bridge around 3 in the morning and they just sit there for a long while. They didn’t experience anything for about 20 minutes or so, making them all believe that it was a hoax about the bridge being haunted. The user and their buddies start to joke around with one another about how stupid the rumor of this bridge being haunted was and eventually started to try to creep each other out. When, out of nowhere, they all heard a loud screaming. The user described the scream as blood-curdling and a high pitch that no one has ever heard before. The user exclaims that the scream continued to go on and on, even after they all got into the cars and drove away. They didn’t deem this as the scary part, though.

The user explains that one of their bodies and them start running for a car right when they heard the first, initial scream. They were sitting a little ways under the bridge and they needed to climb a little bit back up hill to get to their calls. The user continues their story by saying that halfway back to the car, them and their body go from a full blown sprint to an immediate stop at the same time. They never asked what each other saw because the user knew exactly what their friend was seeing- a girl running on all fours into the woods. The user concludes their story by saying they never talk about it much because it gives them the chills and no one seems to ever believe them when they tell them about it.

10. Marks On My Face

A haunting apparition in a mirror unlike the one featured in the story.

Reddit user jorjin informs the readers about living in some unsettling places over the years, but this experience stuck with them the most over the years.

They start their story off by stating that they woke up one morning and walked towards the mirror to brush their teeth and fix their hair like they do every morning. The user describes that they are in a relatively small space where there is a balcony connected to the bathroom area and there are unopenable windows there. The user explains that when they look in the mirror, they notice that one their plants is moving, almost like a breeze is hitting it. They walk over to the plant, which is located next to the balcony door, and triple checks to make sure the door was securely close and it was.

The user recalls that for some odd reason, they lock eyes with one of the pens they have lying on their desk. When they get to the mirror, they noticed the amount of pen markings that are on their face. Their heart started to race and as soon as they cleaned up, they raced out of their room. When they returned home later on that day, they noticed that the balcony door was wide open now.

11. The Bunker

An anonymous reddit user starts their story off by telling the readers they live on the north side of Switzerland and that where they live they have a lot of old military bunkers that are from World War II. When they were7 or 8 years old, the user and some friends decided to go on an adventure day and explore one of the bunkers near them. The bunker they wanted to go and explore was built on a hill inside of a small forest. As they arrived to the bunker, they discovered that the main door was jammed and they had to break into it. Close by, they found a log big enough to use as a battering ram to get the door open.

After multiple attempts to get this door open, the door would not budge an inch for them. Further investigation of the door revealed that there was peephole on it that was about 4 inches (10 centimeters) in diameter. They decided to open it and shone some light into the dark hallway so they could see better. The hallway sat in ruins and had doors on the left and right side of it but the user and their friends couldn’t see the other side of the hallway because it was too long. Each friend tried to grab a glimpse of the hallway, when one friend spoke up and told them that there was a light at the end of the hallway. The user pushed their friend away and went in for a second look.

The user then tells the readers that what they saw next sent shivers throughout their entire body. At the end of the hallway, it appeared that the light they were seeing was a flashlight and behind it was a silhouette of a person. The user took a few steps back and exclaimed that there was a person inside of the bunker and at the same moment they said that, there was someone, or something, knocked on the door from the inside. The user says that they all went into an extreme panic and ran home, and that as soon as the user got home they locked the door. They proceeded to say that the next day in school, the user and their friends talked about what had happened and came to the conclusion that it was probably some of the older kids playing a joke on them.

The user continues the story by saying that a week later them and their friends returned to the same bunker to find that the door looked like someone had opened it after them. The user claims that it was impossible for someone to have opened the door before them because of how jammed it was; but, the user still lives in the same region today and the bunker still haunts them.

12. Small World

Reddit user LilyYoyoINeedGogert recalls of a time back in their college days they were walking home one day with their sisters from a sorority meeting. The user explained that they didn’t live on campus, however, they were only a twenty minute walk away. They continue their story by saying that it was 2 in the morning and there was no one else on the street with them- no cars on the street, no one walking on the opposite side or behind/in front of them. No one.

However, during their walk they came across a white man that was using crutches to walk and had a black dog on the side of him. The user and their sisters stepped aside for the man to pass and use the sidewalk for his advantage, but when they said hello to him, he completely ignored them and didn’t pay any attention to them. The black dog, though, look at the user and their sisters, gave them a look that indicated the dog was scared, and then retreated back to its owner.

The user continues that a few blocks further, they heard the sounds of the crutches again and when they turned a corner, around the bend they saw the same exact man they passed before coming at them again. They stepped aside again, jokingly said it was a small world and tried to offer the man directions just in case he was lost, but him and his brown dog continued to walk on in the night. The dog once again looked at the user and their sisters, looked quite scared, and went back to its owner.

When they were just about home, they heard the sound of the crutches again, only this time they couldn’t pin point the location of where the sound was coming from. They turned down their street and when halfway down the block, the man comes out from behind a building, their building, and walks by them again. The yellow dog looks at the user and their sisters again, looked scared, but returned to its owner. The user exclaims that to this day, they do not understand how the man on the crutches caught up to them so many times, where he actually came from, or why the dog kept changing colors and what happened to it.

13. Stop Now

Reddit user DjangoFlugehorn recalls of the story when they were staying over their friends house one night. The user was 14 years old and the three other friends that were there were all of similar ages. Everyone at the house grew up with one another, except for one because he was the cousin of the friend that the sleepover was taking place at and everyone never met him before. His older sister of the time, who was 16, was the babysitter while the parents were out for the evening.

The babysitter finds a Ouija board in the house and thinks it would be a fun idea to scare everyone. The user jokes that this was the time where people could buy a Ouija board as an actual game where people can play at their house for fun, thinking nothing bad would come of it. Everyone at the sleepover, though, gathers in a circle around the board and the babysitter starts of the questions as either yes or no, directing questions for each person to ask. As they continued with the game, they began to giggle nervously and think it was some type of secret they were all unaware of, basically meaning they were enjoying the game.

The user explains, though, that things begin to get strange as the babysitter asks if anyone was there if they could show themselves. After a few moments pause, a picture frame fell off of the floor and landed on the floor. Everyone freaks out for a moment, but the sitter calmed them down and told them that they needed to help whomever knocked the picture down. They continued to ask questions with terrified faces and racing hearts, and the user remembers that the pointer is now moving more smoothly and rapidly than it did before.

Then, they proceed to ask it a series of questions. They asked if the spirit was in the room and the pointer moved to yes. The next question was if the pointer was a man, the pointer moved to no. They asked if the spirit needed help and the pointed remained on no. Then, they asked what the name of the spirit was and the pointer spelled out S-A-R-A-H. The last thing they request was for the spirit to tell it a secret, and the pointed spelled out “flip a coin”.

They proceeded to get a coin from the loose change jar in the kitchen and rejoined the circle. The coin was then tossed into the air and as they watched it come down, it stopped spinning and falls edge down on the table. When the user instructed the coin to land, they claim that it didn’t bounce, rock, or anything, it just fell onto the table and was perfectly balanced on its side, almost like someone reached out and grabbed it and gently put it on the table like that.

The room was silent, and to break it the pointer started to move again. The user informs the reader that they thought it was all just random letters before realizing that they were initials of someone and included their middle names. Everyone found out then that it was family tradition for the user’s friend and sister to have three middle names, which no one else knew about. The user claims that besides the brother and the cousin, no one would have known the full name of the sister, and the user reinstates that they met the cousin for the first time that night. The user states that somehow in some way, everyone present in the room had their initials spelled out on the board in front of them.

Then, the pointer stopped spelling out initials and spelled out “children. stop. now.” The user says that after that experience it took them a while to finally fall asleep properly and no one ever told their parents what had happened that night at the sleep over. It became their collective secret that they couldn’t rationalize then and they still can’t rationalize to this day.

14. The Knife

Reddit user emptysee starts their story off by saying that it’s a story that doesn’t consist of ghostly figures or haunted houses. Instead, it is a place where the user lived for ten years the place all of a sudden abruptly turned on them. The user explains that places people visit have feels to them and that even the country where you live has its very own feel people get used to over time.

The user used to live on an old Southern plantation that was turned into a horse farm and that it was over 1,000 acres with mainly woods and pastures. The user starts her creepy story when she was walking down a horse trail that was 20 minutes away from her house with her dogs and decided to go off trail with them. The user stated that they took a 90 degree turn, climbed down into a spring, and climbed under an ancient barbwire fence where they wander alongside that for a while. While walking, they discovered two large limsetone caves sitting directly across from one another. They explained that the entrances to these caves were blocked by a bunch of rocks that were haphazardly stacked on top of each other, making them not entirely blocked.

The user expressed that they wanted to go inside of the caves to explore them, but their common sense told them not to because no one knew where they were and they didn’t have a phone on them. So, they decided to walk around the caves when the user found an old knife sitting along side of one; a knife that looked like it was carved from a deer horn. The user exclaims that as soon as they picked up the knife, it felt like there was a sudden shift in the woods. The user’s dogs got closer to them and clung to me, as if something the user couldn’t see was scaring them. The user then said they felt extremely unwelcome, set the knife back where they found it, and traveled out of the woods as quickly as they could. They claim that the feeling they just experienced as soon as they picked up the knife clung to them until they were out of the woods.

They go on to say that they never felt comfortable in the woods again and explain that one moment they were happy and exploring the land and then the next moment they were being watched by someone who hated them and wanted them out of the woods. The user said they tried to pass it off as nerves, but went out to try to find the caves again to never discover them again, even though they knew exactly where they were.

The user explains that they are deeply connected with the land around them because there was a time where they could wake up in the morning, step outside and know if something was wrong- a sick horse, a loose horse, a horse hurt, someone hunting on their land, etc. They claim the experience with the knife to be one of their most unexplained occurrences because as soon as they picked up that knife, they felt extremely hostile. They still can’t fully explain how they felt that day or why they felt that way and have yet to discover those two limestone caves again.

15. “That’s Him”

Reddit user jankylyfe tells an eerie story about they have four little cousins who never got to meet the user’s grandfather. He passed away before they born, and one morning, the cousins ran downstairs for breakfast like they always do. As the user’s uncle was getting their breakfast ready, one of the little cousins pointed the refrigerator and exclaimed loudly, “That’s him!” The uncle didn’t think much of it but continued to ask who was the cousin talking about. The little cousin was pointing to a picture of the grandfather they never got to meet and said, “The man that comes and talks to us at night until we fall asleep sometimes!”

16. The Farmer

Reddit user Tucker48 starts their story off with describing their mother in-law as a cool and funny woman. The user’s wife and mother-in-law were extremely close, but the mother-in-law unfortunately passed away when the users son was about four months old. The user then flashes forward to four years where they live in an old 1930’s era craftsman house in Pasadena, CA, and the user’s son is now about 3 years old.

The user explains that they were giving him a bath one day when the son starts to look over the user’s shoulder and focuses on something, not just random stuff. After a moments pause, the son proceeded to ask why the grandmother called his mom a funny name. The user took a long pause and asked him what he meant, since the user that their son was talking about their mother, not the mother-in-law. The son asks again, but this time includes the nickname the user’s mother-in-law had for their wife. The user became extremely confused about how their son new about this because this was a nickname shared between the wife and her mother, since the mother-in-law had been calling the user’s wife that nickname she was born. They never used the name around the house or anything. The user asked their son where he heard this and the son blankly responded that the farmer told him.

The user grew concerned about this and asked their son who the farmer was, where the son simply replied that it was just his friend. The user told their wife later on about what their son said, and the wife bursts into tears because of the son knowing about her nickname. They both knew it was impossible for the son to know of his mother’s nickname, so the user and their wife just marvel at the fact he knows it.

The next weekend comes around and the user is at home with his son while their wife is at work since she works retail. The user exclaims that they started to hear their son talking and starts having a conversation with someone, saying things like, “yes”, “no,”I don’t know that” and occasionally giggled or laughed. The user goes to their sons room and finds him by himself, so they ask what he was doing. The son simply replied that he was playing and when the user asked with who, their son said, “The farmer.” The user becomes extremely unsettled by this and asks where the farmer is, in which the user’s son told them that the farmer left as soon as he entered the room.

As soon as the wife comes home, the user tells their wife what happened today with their son and she becomes as equally weirded out as the user. They conclude that since they are at a loss for words, if it were to happen again, then they would take action against it. A few days later, in the middle of the night, the user and the wife wake up to hear their son say, “Grandma says you and I can’t be friends anymore.” The user and the wife get up and go check on their son, and find him just sitting on his bed. After the user asks if the son was okay, the son replies, “Yea, Grandma says I can’t play with the farmer anymore.”

The user ends his story by saying that their son never mentioned the farmer again ever. He is now 13 years old and doesn’t remember anything about the farmer and what happened for a little while.

17. The Ritual

Reddit user Mustang_Gold tells the readers of their story that started after their grandmother died. The user explains that after she had passed away, they performed this type of ritual, as part of the tradition, and the ritual is that you create a shrine for the deceased person. The user continues to explain that after the person passes away, the first seven days, at exactly 7 p.m., you remain silent for one hour so the spirit of the deceased can come and say their goodbyes. The user reports that on the last day of this ritual, a glass vase that was sitting by the shrine, fell over and shattered on the ground while the family was sitting silently in the adjacent room. The family became on edge because the vase had been sitting there for years, seemed secure where it was sitting, and no windows or doors were open to create a strong enough breeze to knock it over.

After the silent hour had finished, they called their aunt who was doing the same ritual at her house. The aunt exclaims that the strangest thing had happened to them- they were all sitting upstairs in the same room during the silent hour when one of their doors just slammed shut. The aunt said that no windows or doors were open to create a strong enough breeze or wind to make the door slam shut, and that they even double checked the house to make sure all of the windows and door were closed and locked up. The aunt also told the user and their family that as they all went back downstairs, all the doors, except the two locked doors (the front and the garage doors) were open. They claim that they had the house for over a decade and nothing has ever happened like that.

18. The Accident

Not the accident described in the story, but an unfortunate accident that happened one night. Hopefully everyone was okay.

Reddit user Xdannyx starts their terrifying story off by saying that something found them after their car accident- but they aren’t sure what it was.

The user explains that on their way home with their family after they all took a trip somewhere, the car hit black ice that was on a curve and sent the family rolling in their car. For some reason, that day the user didn’t wear their seatbelt and they were ejected from the car by breaking through the window they were sitting by and describing the horrific event as their face was used to ram through the glass as they were ejected. The user says that they tried to get up from the bushes they landed in but they couldn’t because of the intense pain they were in, indicating that they had a broken collar bone, and claim that at the point they lost complete consciousness. Not knowing how long they were lying like that, around 3 a.m. the user slightly opened their eyes to see a flash of light over them, meaning their dad had found them, lifted them with ease, and helped them get over to where the totaled car and rest of the family were. The user says that one of the most distinctive details about this time was that the hands that were helping him were extremely firm.

After the user talked to their brother about what had happened, they slowly realized that their father never went looking for them. They went on to say that their mother was severely hurt and no one knew where the user was- they all assumed that the user was dead underneath the car and that they couldn’t get to them. The user also recalls that they never had a flashlight, either. They don’t know who or what had helped them that night, but they distinctly remember a shining light over their eyes and firm hands guiding them to the car and their family. The user always thought that it was their dad who found them, but the truth was no one knew who it was- or what.

19. The Pale White Figure

Reddit user dongSOwrong68 tells the story of when they were 12, they were in their room one night with their bedroom door wide open. They were watching television with a pillow behind their head and shoulders, supporting them so they could sit up a little bit on their bed. The user explains that while they were watching television, they could perfectly see out their door and says that is completely black looking out from her bed. Out of nowhere, something catches the users eye, making them look over to their bedroom door. The user sees a human-shaped object moving past her door, left to right, and when the user stared directly at it, it just stared right back at them. A split second later, the figure was past the right threshold of the door and the user was completely petrified.

The user was in a complete panic state at this point and then heard the garage door open. The user said they ran down the stairs and ran into their 19-year-old brother, who was just getting home, and started to tell him everything that happened. The brother grabs a bat and they start to check every room in the house, under all of the beds, and even in the closets. What the found, though, was that everyone in the house was in a dead sleep and they found nothing. The user finishes their terrifying tale by saying that they never left their bedroom door open again, even though it has been 11 years since their experience.

20. The Warning

Reddit user gndcd402 tells of a time during college, the user used to travel on the weekends between their campus and hometown, which is 90 miles apart. One weekend, though, an acquaintance of theirs from high school decided to drive home as well, but in separate cars. On the Saturday night the user returned home, they remembered that they had a vivid dream where an infant girl came up to them and said, “Please…take care of my sister” and proceeded to show the user a picture of a car crash on a highway that consisted of a silver Corolla (the user’s friends car) and a black Ford explorer.

Freaked out by this dream, the user called their friend and told them what had happened in to. Then, they asked their friend if they had any sisters, since the user only had met their brothers. The friend informed the user that their mother had a stillborn girl and when the user asked how old the sister would have been today, the friend answered 5. The user convinced their friend to drive back with them because they were afraid what would happen to them, and that night on the news, they saw that a black Ford explorer was involved in a crash. It was exactly what the user saw in their dream, except there was no silver Corolla, only the black Ford explorer.

21. The Babysitter

Not the child in the story, but could he have looked like that and scared his babysitter so much?

Reddit user peachskylines talked about something that had happened a couple of weeks ago and deemed it to be one of the most creepiest moments they have encountered.

They proceeded to start the story by saying that they on and off again babysit for a two year old while his parents occasionally have date night. Before, though, the user’s friend babysat for him and he started to talk about his grandpa, who the son never met because the grandfather passed away a few weeks after their son was born. The user says that ever since their friend told them that, they always prepare to hear something weird like that whenever they would babysit him.

The night the user is babysitting the son, he points to an empty wall that was in front of us and simply says,”Grandpa”. Knowing that the son is two, the user didn’t ask for a greater explanation because he did not speak all that well yet. The user then says they start to talk about other things because they were beginning to get a little creeped out by what the son had just said and pointed to. Next thing the user knew, the son gripped the chair he was sitting on, his eyes widened, his teeth were chattering uncontrollably, and he started to shake. The user is completely freaked out at this point and grabs the son and tells him that it was time to watch a movie before he went to bed.

Later in the night, the user goes to take the son up to bed when they noticed that the door was unlocked. The user locks the door, shakes the handle to confirm that it was lock, and continued to take the son upstairs to get ready for bed since he was already half asleep. The user is in his room for twenty minutes to make sure the son fell asleep, and when they go downstairs, and sees that the front door is again unlocked. They start to look around the house to make sure nothing was out of the ordinary, which it’s not, and went to go check on the son again. The user claims they didn’t bother to look in the other rooms because they had the sons door open and they would have seen if someone came up or went down the stairs. The user went downstairs again and watched television until the parents got home and claimed they jumped at every little sound they heard. At the end of their story, they said they debated for a solid hour to watch the son again the next time they had asked him.

22. The Man in the Top Hat

Reddit user Swallows84 talks about when they were around 4 or 5 years old, the same age as their brother, they lived in a house that was about 100 years old. One day, they were walking up the stairs when they came across a tall man that was wearing a long black coat and a top hat who walked into the living room, which was directly left of the staircase. The two became freaked out, but thought that their dad was playing a joke on them and decided to call out a man they just saw. Both of their parents came out from the kitchen, which was on the opposite side of the stair cases and is completely isolated from the living room.

The user claims that they never spoke about that experience again, but about a month ago, their daughter asked if they believed in ghosts. The user proceeded to tell their daughter the story, and immediately after finishing the story, the user got a text from their brother saying that he was just talking about the same exact story to his partner and asked if the user remembered it.

23. The Talking Portrait

Reddit user Tucker33 remembers a time when they were about 6 or 7 years old and they were staying the night at their grandparents house. They were on the couch, trying to sleep, when they started to hear whispering come from somewhere. The user claims that they had a painting of their aunt hanging on their wall and that the painting started to talk to the user. The user describes that the painting wasn’t creepy, though, because it was talking to them just like their aunt would talk to them and was asking if the user was behaving and other things. The painting of the aunt then tells the user to wake their grandfather up because she needed to talk to him. The user did and when the grandfather realized she wasn’t really there, he scolded the user for waking him up.

In between the threats and insults the user was getting, the grandfather noticed someone moving outside of the window. He proceeded to grab his pistol and told the user to stay in the room with their grandmother. A minute or so later, they heard a gunshot ring in the distance. It turned out there was a prison about 20 miles away from where the grandparents lived and 3 prisoners had killed a guard and escaped the prison. The prisoners were looking at the grandparents house to see what they could take, including the grandfather’s truck, but the grandfather saw them first and ended up shooting one in the shoulder. The user to this day still doesn’t know why the painting was talking to them, but the grandparents never experienced ghosts before that night and never experienced them again afterwards.

24. Golden Light

Reddit user danish-one recalls that one night their mother had a seizure in her sleep, got wrapped up in her blankets, and sadly suffocated herself. Paramedics, though, came to the rescue and got her breathing again and loaded her into the ambulance. The user remembers this was about 4:30 in the morning.

The user remembers that they were tasked to call the rest of the family to let them know their mother was in the hospital. The first and most important phone call the user had to make was to their grandmother because that was the mother of the user’s mother. Before the user can make a phone call, though, the phone started to ring, and it was their grandmother calling. The user explained that this would be about 5:30 in the morning their time, but 2:30 in the morning the grandmother’s time. She informed the user that she saw her daughter bathed in a golden light and claimed that they talked to one another and she was dead, but was heading to a better place now.

At the point, the user said they didn’t know their mother was going to die and that their father didn’t know his wife was going to die, either. The doctor’s didn’t even know she was brain dead yet, but somehow the users grandmother knew her daughter had passed away and contacted the user.

25. The Security Camera

Reddit user trudenter talks about how they used to work at a place that needed to be manned for 24 hours a day. The reason for this was because the user handled sensitive documents/files and if somebody needed this information in the middle of the night, the user would need to get it for them or confirm that they did in fact have it.

The security there was kind of tight with bars on the windows and multiple doors were locked to get to where the user was. The facility would give the user jobs to do overnight, but they would finish them so quickly that he would spend the rest of the night playing games on their phone or watching videos on Netflix. During the last third of their shift, though, they heard a door slam. They look into the security camera and see someone walking down the hall towards the room the user is in. At first, the user thought that it was someone who came in incredibly early for their shift, so the user turned and waited for them to come in.

Nobody came in through the door, though, which made the user panic a little bit. The building wasn’t incredibly big, the so the user assumed that they would be able to find the guy that came in through the door and started to the various offices the building consisted of. After checking all of the offices and the storage room, the user didn’t see anyone, but noticed that a fire door had been closed. The user then tries to go rewind the camera footage but it’s password protected and the user didn’t have the password to watch the camera back. The user became entirely freaked out by the whole thing because of how the person walked down the hall, almost as if they were extremely determined to get to where the user was.

The user finishes their shift and people start to come in. Their replacement comes in and they inform her what happened over the night and starts to believe that they maybe imagined the whole thing. The user goes home and is informed that the manager and their replacement would look at the cameras. When the user got home, they called their manager and found out that the fire door shut on its own and then the camera froze for an hour, only to show the user reopening the door.

26. The Easter Bunny

Reddit user hereholdmybeerdammit tells the story of when they were little they used to live by the woods and could always see a cemetery from their back porch. One Easter, though, they remember waking up and seeing the terrifying costume of the Easter bunny and distinctly remembers smelling the wet hay. When they woke up later in the morning, the user didn’t tell anyone this but they remember there was an extra Easter egg in their house that their parents didn’t hide.

Years after this strange event, the user asked their parents if they would ever dress up as the Easter bunny and come into their room. The parents almost laughed at the idea and said they would never go through that much trouble. The user’s younger sister, though, said that she remembered the Easter bunny coming into their room and making a remark about the wet hay smell (the user and their sister shared a bunkbed at the time of the strange event). The user grew to become more terrified of what had happened since their little sister remembers seeing a strange bunny costume in their room.

The story gets stranger because the user told the story to their friend at the lunch table one day and at the table, one of the girls was a neighbor that lived across the street from them. The neighbor recalled that on one Easter, she woke up and saw a person dressed the Easter bunny standing at the end of her driver. This sent chills down everyone’s spine.

27. Time Travel

Reddit user casadeparadise starts off their story by saying that the easiest way to describe what had happened to them and their friend was that they time traveled.

They were in high school and the user’s friend was taking the bus back with them to the user’s house. They would have gotten home around 2:45 p.m. and the user’s mother would get home around 3:00 p.m., so before the mother came home, they decided to go on a hike and left a note on the counter just in case they weren’t back by the time the mother came home. The user explains that they took their usual route that was up the backyard hill because they wanted to avoid the crazy people that made makeshift houses along the trail. They climbed some trees for a little while and even checked out a section of the car graveyard they never checked out before.

After hiking for a while, they decided to take a break on top of the mountain and take advantage of the unusual beautiful day. The user said that everything was incredibly green and that there were bright sunbeams that were shining down from the canopy top. The user started to run through the night, but then said they should probably start heading back before it got too dark and the mom would be entirely upset if they missed dinner. On the way down from the mountain top, they stumbled upon a pond they never encountered before on their normal hikes. It was small, according to the user, and had a small wooden boat in it, and there were teepees set up around the pond, but not old ones, just ones that were ratty and unstable.

They thought that maybe someone was living there and decided to take a new path home to not mess up the living space of someone else. They climbed down and up an old quarry and dropped off on the main road that happened to lead to the user’s house. The user claims that they were disgusting and filthy, but walked the mile to their house. They somehow returned home before their mother, which was strange to the user, but they threw out the note anyways so she didn’t think they were out galavanting. The mother returned home three minutes later and wondered how they got so incredibly dirty at school. The user looked and saw that their mother returned home at their normal time and they had only been gone for a whopping 13-15 minutes. The user exclaims that they don’t talk about that day anymore because it was too confusing for them to understand themselves and they believe that them and their friend time traveled that day.

28. Strange Voices

Reddit user ReDdiT_JuNkBoT tells of the time they were at a friends house when they passed out on the couch. They remember waking up a bit later and realized it was time for them to head home. They noticed that the light for their friends room was on, but the door was shut. The user walked by the friends room and told him that they were leaving because they had to work in the morning, and their friend said, “YUP! SEE YA!” The user walked to the fridge, grabbed their drink from it, and walked by the room again and said, “later dude” and the friend responded, “YUP”. The user felt something was off and felt like his friend wasn’t really their friend, so they opened the door to see no one sitting in the room. The user looked outside and noticed that the friend’s truck was gone, too. The user freaked out and called their friend, in which the friend said he had left 15 minutes ago to go to McDonald’s.

The user ran out the door and sat outside and waited for their friend to return home. The friend, when he came home, told the user that before he had moved on, the kid before him hung himself in the attic and ever since the friend moved in, he would hear strange noises and voices around the place. The user went to a neighbor and asked him what had happened at the friends place, and the neighbor confirmed the story as well. The neighbor turned out to be the kids older brother, which made it even creepier for the user. Now, anytime someone goes over there, they have a weird experience they can’t explain, and that the user’s friend has been dealing with it for years. Sometimes, when it becomes too much for the friend, he yells out, “LEAVE ME ALONE” and the strange occurrences stop for a while, but always come back.

These strange occurrences happened to real people and have completely altered their life in many ways. Some of which are explainable and people have dealt with living with them, but others are so strange and peculiar that people still don’t know how to explain what truly happened to them. They still send shivers down the spines of the people who experienced them, making them talk very rarely about them. What do you think about these strange, haunting stories?
